The internet is somewhere that people can go to express themselves. The internet is somewhere people can go to escape their everyday lives and problems. If the government starts to force their beliefs of judgment on us, they will start trying to take control over. We use the internet to discover, having unlimited access to every topic imaginable. But if we let the government take control and start censoring things that puts limits on what we can do, it puts limits on all of our potential.
Already in countries like China the internet is being heavily censored, and I’m Egypt the Internet was completely shut off, because it was the cause for a revolution. the government knew that it was a tool that people could use to spread the truth so they got rid of it all together.
it won’t seem that bad at first, it will probably be the censorship of a few sites, but then it will spread. already we aren’t aloud to got on some sites. that’s mainly for our protection. but the government doesn’t know what we need protection from. what if they get rid of everything that is even mildly offensive?
and it isn’t just blocking sites, it’s blocking expression. they’ll start blocking anything that people upload to the Internet that DOEST belong to them. that means that YouTube will basically be destroyed. no more easy accessible videos or music. no more Facebook. and video hosting site when you can watch movies and tv shows will be shut down. Wikipedia will be shut down or heavily censored, because people are writing information that doesn’t belong to them. see, it isn’t just little things that you’ll barely notice. no, its things that will drastically change how the Internet is perceived and used. It will no longer be a place that people can go to freely express their opinions. it wi be a place were you can’t do anything without a fear of being blocked or even fined. there will be no freedom in the only place where you could gaurentee it before. we can’t let this happen.
if we can’t take a stand then who will? nobody, because nobody is as passionate about the subject as the youth. nobody knows how many jobs it will effect, how many businesses are completely formed from the Internet. those will be changed if these internat censoring acts go through. they may end up being shut down. people will lose money, they may even lose their jobs. Just because it isn’t a physical, tangible world doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter or that this won’t effect millions of people. we can’t let the government go through with this, because it isn’t okay! we can’t let people think that they can jut do whatever they want without thinking of how it will effect others and their lives. they don’t understand how many people rely on the Internet, and we’re going to have to show them. if they start this, what else will the censor? should we just sit on the sidelines while this goes down? no! no, we need to try and stop this. we can’t just depend on other people to do the work for us. we have to take a stand, because we can! we can stop this from happening, and we have to stop this from happening.
